Technology: 3D Video Surveillance

From Alec:

In the movie, Captain Kirk can be seen looking through surveillance footage following the bombing of the Kelvin Memorial Archive in London. What makes this technology unique is the way that Kirk is able to interact with the bombing footage. He can zoom, pan, and tilt through each frame and explore the recordings from any angle.

In real life, this technology does not yet exist for video surveillance. In recent years, however, a similar concept has been implemented into professional sporting events. The Technology is called Free-D, and uses multiple cameras positioned at different angles to render an interactive, 3d environment [1]. In the same way that Kirk is able to focus in on precise details while analyzing the bombing footage, Free-D technology allows sportscasters to replay and focus in on game highlights at virtually any angle.
